Themes

Materials science at the University of Melbourne extends across a range of fields including physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering. 

We showcase materials research under five interdisciplinary themes: Materials conservation, Materials for medicine, Quantum and nanophotonic materials, Materials for energy and Materials processing.

Funding opportunities

Our goal is to support, mentor and train the next generation of materials scientists, as well as promote highly innovative interdisciplinary research projects.

We offer financial support to researchers and postgraduate students through the University's Interdisciplinary Seed Funding scheme as well as three PhD scholarship programs: the CSIRO-MMI Materials Science PhD Scholarship, the Interdisciplinary PhD Scholarship and the Inaugural UoM-IBM PhD Scholarship.

Partners

We strongly believe that building collaborations and collective strength will help overcome many of the challenges our society faces today in areas such as health, energy and sustainability.

That is why we are involved in collaborative projects such as developing a bionic eye and investigating the effect of mass adoption of electric cars on electricity distribution grids. Visit our Partners page for more information

Platform development pilot program

This pilot program will establish a framework for the support of research infrastructure in order to deliver improved research capabilities and outcomes. The program will provide a technical support officer for each of the selected platforms.
